about

No stranger to the Freebooter Lounge however, the first release on the Freebooter Lounge for Paul McMahon under his Bold Parade alias.

Known more for his nu jazz and funk fuelled up-tempo sound this time Paul brings something new to his repertoire an emotional spoken word with the usual expert musicality, more soundtrack than dancefloor. Beautiful, moving and with two complimenting remixes from Tambores En Benjrras and Simon Sheldon.

Written and produced by Paul McMahon, Ivan Krnic on Bass, Derek McEwan on vocals,
Simon Sheldon on Melodica and Etienne Bartholmew on Sitar.

Bold Parade is the latest project from London based, Belfast born producer Paul McMahon. Paul has been making music for over 20 years under the name Crashdaddy. He has also worked with Mark Bell as part of the group Bellcrash. Together and separately with Mark, Paul has released through Sunshine Recordings, Seventh Sign, Illicit, Island Hopper and Freebooter Lounge, among others. Paul’s signature sound combines cool beats with jazz styled musicians to blend modern production with classic rhythmic jazz overtones. His recent two Bold Parade EP’s ‘Flowers In The Dirt’ and ‘Heat’ have both received wide acclaim from the soulful and jazz fraternity, and both EP’s receiving airplay on Craig Charles’ Funk & Soul Show on BBC 6Music.

Graham ‘Gripper’ Newby began producing music in 1991 and has had his music released on labels such as Grand Central Records, Dancefloor USA , OffWorld Sounds, Om Records, Upskirt Records Ibiza, Fat City Recordings, Triple J Australia, Lockdown and many more. Covering traditional funk, jazz and soul based beats, deeper US house and hip hop, his music had always been both eclectic and left of centre.

In 2021 under the name Tambores En Benirras, he released the album ‘Orbe Dotado’ on Ibiza’s highly regarded NuNorthern Soul label to much critical acclaim.

The new alias allowed Gripper to explore and develop the more leftfield, Balearic and ambient aspects of his production work.
The label, run by long time Ibiza resident and DJ, Phat Phil Cooper, released the follow up Tambores En Benirras LP, ‘Ondas Horizontales’ at the end of September 2023 and once again, the record was celebrated amongst the White Isle’s Balearic family and the wider underground electronic music fraternity, earning Gripper widespread acclaim.

His early releases have been supported and played by such luminaries as Louie Vega, Kenny Dope Gonzalez, Tony Humphries, Roger Sanchez, DJ Camacho, Laurent Garnier, earning him a far reaching and genre-crossing network of friends and contacts across the wider music industry.

His early remixes have included work for the likes of Usher, KRS-One, Mobb Deep, Little Egypt, Shaun Ryder, AIM, Gard Du Nord, Jon Kennedy, Victor Simonelli, Niko and the seminal Bottom Line Records from NYC. Recent remixes under the TEB guise for Daniel Stegner ( Flashbaxx) and Jesse Fahnestock (Other Skies)

Having played across Europe, in the USA at regular Miami WMC events and further afield in Asia and Nirth Africa, highlights of his 37 year long DJing career are many. Some favourites from nearer his north west England roots include appearances at the legendary Upfront All nighters in the late 80s, playing with The Orb, Moby and Sasha during early 90s guest spots at Coventry’s Eclipse, and more recently hosting and playing with artists at his own venue including Ruf Dug, Opolopo, Todd Terry, Marcel Vogel, Luke Una, Terry Farley, Victor Simonelli, Shut Up & Dance, LFO, Belle & Sebastian, A Certain Ratio, Jon Dasilva, Terry Hall, Sammy B (Jungle Bros) and Don Letts

His long standing love affair with radio work began guesting on BBC Radio Lancashire in 1989 on Sunday afternoon institutions, Funkology and Gary Hickson’s dance shows. He guested regularly on London’s pioneering digital pirate station INTERface and co ran Sonic Zoo Radio from his hometown, Barrow-in-Furness from 2011-2020 where he developed his penchant for eclectic 6 hour sets with his long running Zoo-ology shows that morphed into his current monthly 8 year residency at Amsterdam’s famous Kashmir Lounge.

Gripper played on Amsterdam’s Red Light Radio, both standing in for friend and fellow house music veteran DJ Dribbler as well as hosting his own shows. Guest spots across independent radio networks around the world have been complimented recently with appearances on Ibiza Sonica and Open Lab Radio on Ibiza.

Since the Covid pandemic, Gripper has been resident at Ibiza’s Word Of Mouth and playing regularly at the legendary Pikes, on the bill with artists such as Crazy P, David Morales, Luca Averna, Andy Wilson, Dicky Trisco, Mella Dee, and Moxie amongst many more.

Simon Sheldon has been writing, producing, releasing, and performing under many pseudonyms for 30 years plus releasing records on the likes of . In various ensembles and as a solo artist, he has played live in the US, throughout Europe and Asia and more recently Ibiza. Now with his label The Freebooter Lounge, he has guested on Café Mambo radio during lockdown and with a release on the stella Get Physical Records had the 9th top selling Electronica track at Beatport for 2022 for his collaboration with fellow freebooter LOEW and DJ T which got to number 1 @ Beatport. Music royalty Sasha put ‘Blaze’ on his hugely respected ‘LUZoSCURA’ collection.
