about

Mannish Water is the first of a series of LP's which are a collection of vinyl releases, remixes and previously un-released Spree tracks from the past 20 years. Spree was conceived by Simon Sheldon and Suzanne Savage back in 2001 with Spree’s debut release on the stellar Aspect Records. Further releases on the likes on New Identity Recordings gained plays and praise from the likes of DJ SS, LTJ Bukem and Ray Keith and the track Watari included in this LP, originally a vinyl only release on Basic Records, won track of the week on the then fledgling BBC1Xtra.

Spree’s first live gig supporting London Electricity was when Antoine Rivoire introduced himself to Simon & Suzanne and soon after joined the band on bass, followed shortly after by DMC champion Karl F, Lewis Smith on Sax and MC Kat. The foundations were set for a ‘full live’ act which in 2003 were voted in the last three of the Best Live act category of the Knowledge Magazine Awards, up against London Elektricity and I Kamanchi.

Spree Live are characterized by influences of Nu Jazz, d’n’b, gritty vocals, old school piano breaks, tight drum programming, improv jazzid horns and turntablist hocus pocus. Spree live have performed in support mode alongside the likes of Roni Size, Jazzanova, Kosheen, Daara J and Giles Peterson and headlined events across Europe, Asia and the USA, as well as playing the highly regarded SXSW festival and on the Jazz World Stage at Glastonbury. With 2022 being the 20th year anniversary since the first vinyl release on Aspect Records we thought it was the right time for Mannish Water to see the light of day.
